Who Speaks For Me Copyright© 2008 by Helen Tinsley i am the voice of the voiceless i am the voice of those students who are uneducated, miseducated or simply not given the tools to be successful in society today. i am the voice of those students who languish in special education classes, remedial programs, alternative classes or other structures that marginalize & demoralize their essence. i am the voice of students whose spirit is squashed by uncaring adults, low expectations & pervasive disregard in inner city schools throughout America. i am their voice & this is their story. STOP – u don’t know me u only make money off me yea, tho i walk thru the valley of public schools i shall fear no evil for i am BLACK & my God is with me. i sit in classes, raise my hand, draw my pictures, want to read my story & teacher, u don’t call on me music teacher – u give out instruments & u bypass me math teacher, u have calculators i never see art teachers – your closets r full of papers, paints and clay u think r too good for me principal – u create cracks to push me in breed academic gaps & try to limit me what is your problem & whose agenda do u follow? i am strong, powerful and smart & i’m gonna do me i read the books u hide understand the knowledge u deny & recognize today is the day we will not be shy we will take this information & fly. today we are revolving, slowly evolving & the lies are dissolving. the revolution was televised when the levees broke & America choked Langston Hughes wrote about the ways of white folks & the Hon Elijah Muhammad spoke — told us Wake up Black Folks This is the final Call! 7 Comments Over 30 years ago....Helen typing stories...the journey continues...Greetings to those of you that already know me and to those I have not had the pleasure of meeting yet. I am a black woman, mother, grandmother, educator, artist, and fighter for children…still a work in progress. In this particular “conversation” I want you to have some sense of who I am and what I am about. I raised 4 children (now adults at various stages in their development) and I am a Grandma of 5. I have been blessed to work with children for over 30 years in various ways…and there are unbelievable stories from that journey ― some that hurt you and scar you to the core and others that warm and touch your heart. Tonight when I came home from work, spirit told me to write and send this particular blog out ― immediately, with urgency! I have no idea why I felt this tremendous sense of urgency to write this tonight. But I listen to the voice of the Creator. I have learned through many hard lessons that when the Creator tells me to do something ― not to question it, but to obey. So I am obeying the message I was given. My original intent of this blog was to focus on health, and holistic healing. Tonight the conversation is about Black families and public education. However, in reality any aspect of our life has to do with holistic healing – be it physical, mental, emotional, education, family, survival, etc. Folks, I have been working on a book about the stories of Black families in public education for a while. For me, it will be one way of sharing the stories I have been blessed to experience first hand as a mother, teacher, woman, neighbor and friend. I find that when people hear stories of diverse families, different situations and various experiences, that they get a better understanding of what people go through which can make us all more sensitive to the plight of others ― if we care. Over the years I have also spent many nights in meetings and on the phone talking with relatives and friends about public school drama that they and I were dealing with as parents and teachers. I raised 4 children in the public schools of New Jersey and I could go on an on about my families experiences. But, I want to hear from you. I want you to share with me the stories you have lived, the experiences you have gone through both good and bad as parents, students, teachers, school staff, friends, neighbors, etc. I want to include your stories in this book by sharing “real life” experiences of Black folks, from across the country. It is important that we share and publicly reveal our stories, because some people go through certain experiences with teachers, schools and programs and think it is them alone. They sometimes suffer in silence, and other times celebrate in isolation. It is important to describe and expose the reality of what is happening to Black students in public schools and to also look at how to change an inherently flawed system. If you are interested in sharing a story or experience with us, please send it as a comment or as an attachment to this blog. We will protect your privacy if you choose to share your story with us. Your name, child's name and school name will not be shared. We need to include diverse experiences in the book to show the challenges Black children are facing in public schools on a national level. We also want to focus on ways to bring about positive and productive change! We look forward to your stories. Thank you. Helen Tinsley Finding Your Center ![]() I appreciate the interest, support and love I have received since the first conversation of this blog: Helen’s Holistic Healing. I want to make sure we are all on the same page with my intent and purpose of this blog. I have delved in this path (herbs, holistic health and wellness) for many years and have been blessed with certain experiences, acquired some knowledge and learned many lessons ― and so have you ― the participants & readers of this blog! I have sometimes been my own “worst patient” and resorted to the quick or easy fix. It is now time for application mode, so I am stepping up to the plate and taking responsibility to practice and share what I’ve learned. I am also eager for us to learn from one another. So, it is time for growth and this blog is an opportunity for us to share and apply collective wisdom and knowledge. Please Note: The information contained in this blog is not intended to diagnose or treat medical ailments or replace medical advice and guidance. It is designed to provide a look at herbs, supplements and practices that promote natural healing and wellness. Please consult your physician or medical provider and follow their recommendations and/or advice. Let me break this down to you in layman terms: I am NOT a medical doctor, health teacher or nutritional advisor. I am simply a sister, woman, mother, grandmother who is eager to bring people together to share information that can benefit all of us. I can not and will not diagnose or offer individual advice. This blog is an opportunity for us to SHARE information on health and wellness. When we look at health and wellness, we must start at the very center of our existence and recognize, honor and commune with the Creator, spiritual force, higher power or divine energy, that creates and sustains. Regardless of the name you attach to the higher power ― the essence is the same. As a child growing up, I was baptized into the Catholic religion. I attended Catholic school and church for many of my early years. I followed the rituals without any idea of its roots, little understanding and without gaining any sense of spiritual connection. I questioned different principles and rituals in Catholic school and was basically “silenced.” Many years later, as a young adult in college, I was led to Islam and identified solely with that religion and practice. It grounded me and I learned many lessons from a religious, spiritual and historical perspective. I have studied and explored several indigenous practices and philosophies and my view has broadened. Everything and everyone living grows and changes ― and fortunately, I am no exception. At this point and time in my life, I choose to define myself as “spiritual.” I find through my personal experiences, that religion often “separates” whereas spirituality tends to “unite.” Therefore, I am on a spiritual mission ― to fulfill the purpose the creator has for me on earth. When I am told to speak, I speak… when I am told to write, I write… when I am told to share, I share... And this is why I am here with you sharing these words… Many times we go through life rushing from one place to another, from one event to the next…barely able to catch our breath. All along the way, we encounter people ― some who energize us and others who drain us (if we let them). We give up our energy negatively by rehashing the negative experiences, conversations and interactions of the “haters”, blood suckers and negative people in our lives. Sometimes we have to deal with these people: an irate boss, disagreeable family member; and there are others we can minimize our interactions with them, or decide to eliminate them from our lives (if we so choose). When we go through something (usually drama) with these folks, we often want to tell somebody ― I know I do. Yet, each time we talk about a negative interaction, conversation or encounter needlessly, we give it power to grow. So we have to be stop feeding that negative energy and not engage in these non productive conversations and be a reminder to one another as well. One of my favorite sayings is: “People come into our lives for a reason, a season or a lifetime.” The key is to know who is in our lives, what their purpose is and what the lessons are that they bring. It is time for all of us to claim our power and peace first! ![]() Original Painting by Helen Hampton (My Grandmother) We all have a divine path to follow. We are humans having a spiritual experience. Regardless of one’s religious beliefs and affiliations – at the core of our existence is our belief system. Find the path that is in harmony with your belief system and the path that centers you. Start your day Right! The morning energy is very powerful. Wake up a few minutes earlier to incorporate some morning communing with the Creator and your inner spirit. Begin your day by taking a few minutes of solitude and give thanks for another day. Still your mind through meditation, deep breathing, quiet time and focus your day. “Energy goes where thoughts flow.” Some of the most profound lessons I learned from the book and movie “The Secret” are: “I am the most powerful magnet in the universe. As I think a thought, I am also attracting like thoughts to me.” “Thoughts become things; through conscious receptivity we can birth our ideas.” Therefore, we have the power to set our intention for the day and we can plan our day with positive thoughts. “…through conscious receptivity we can birth our ideas…” As we think about our individual lives – reflect on your morning routines. How do you begin your day? Are you relaxed and unhurried, waking up to prayer, meditation, exercise, yoga, and a healthy bowl of oatmeal and fruit, or running out the door late, grabbing a quick cup of coffee and pastry or bagel at the local deli? I have sure been there many, many times with the rushing…hurried…schedule. It is time for change! We have to keep in mind our bodies are a temple – we have to give the temple the best in spiritual, physical and holistic care. Take a look at your life and ask yourself these questions: What daily routines, rituals or spiritual practices do you follow? Do you need to regroup and incorporate more grounding, balancing activities into your daily practice beginning with your morning routine? Do you need to get on a new path? The choice is yours. Leap and the net will appear! What practices and rituals center and ground you? ![]() This blog provides an ongoing dialogue about the medicinal and folk uses of herbs, tried and tested home remedies and a look at alternate types of holistic treatments. In this first issue I will provide you with information on my background and why I decided to create this vehicle (Helen’s Holistic Healing) for sharing and discussion. We all learn from one another, so I look forward to your feedback, insight and sharing as we grow in our knowledge and practice of holistic healing. I am a self-taught herbalist and I embrace a variety of holistic practices from ancient to present times. However, as I go through this journey called life, there are situations and times when I don't always follow the knowledge I've learned about wellness and I fall victim to indulging in quick meals, chocolate chip cookies and periods of limited exercise. This blog is about personal growth towards holistic living for me and you. We will explore and discover ways to bring about healthy and holistic changes in our lives. I became a life-long student of herbology in 1975, after being diagnosed with a life-threatening blood clot. I underwent the typical treatment including venograms with contrast, hospitalization, intravenous medications including blood thinners and pain killers, aqua heating pads and related standard treatments. Although that particular blood clot was eventually contained and dissolved, I continued to have related problems with circulation, phlebitis as well as complications from each of the treatments I was given. Surprisingly, no-one seemed concerned with the underlying “cause” of the problem. I was fortunately conscious enough to recognize if the cause isn’t identified and eliminated, that the problem would continue. Thus, I sought out alternate types of treatment. As the saying goes, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” There was no exception in this case. I was spiritually led to Dr. John Moore, an herbalist at the former Tree of Life Bookstore in Harlem, NYC. He introduced me to the world of herbs. After a brief consultation with him, he prescribed an herb that is a powerful blood purifier and told me to become pro-active and learn how to heal myself. He urged me to begin my journey into natural healing by purchasing the book: Back to Eden, by Jethro Kloss. I was on a roll ― eager to learn, hungry for knowledge and ready to take control of my health and life. That book became the catalyst that led me to study herbs and natural healing for the last 35 years. One of the first important realities I learned early on is the limitations of American medicine. Generally speaking, American or “western” medicine is not focused on “healing.” Often when people have an illness, ailment or disease in this country, the medical practitioner either attempts to anesthetize the patient, which in effect “masks” the pain, remove the problematic organ (which causes systematic imbalances), or develop a maintenance plan. Rarely, does the dialogue talk about healing. Is there any wonder? The entire medical system in America basically makes money when you are ill. Therefore, to maintain your support of the medical industry, individuals with problems are often put on maintenance plans. This generally requires the use of medication (which provides the financial support to the pharmaceutical industry), continued visits to the Dr. (financial support for the physicians) and or testing at laboratories and hospitals (additional fees). Additionally, the ongoing ingestion of medication especially over time generally taxes other organs and causes additional ailments. Obviously, there is a place and need for many of the services and methods of the American medical industry. However, we must all become knowledgeable and vigilant about our health. Our future rests in our hands. In these conversations, I will explore various herbs, their physical characteristics, medicinal and folk uses and related trivia. I will also share interesting and noteworthy information pertaining to health. Finally, there will be suggested readings, guest bloggers and unlimited possibilities that will emerge. I look forward to sharing this blog with my readers and for us to collectively learn from one another’s experiences. As a mother of 4 adult children and 5 grandchildren, I will also include, where appropriate, anecdotes of my journey and my trials and tribulations trying to raise healthy, wholesome, conscious children in a fast-paced world. Come join me as we explore Helen’s Holistic Healing. |
